Geoscope S
ession at Planetwork
June 11, 2003

Over on Oreillynet, Schulyer
Erle posted  a great report on the 'Geostorytelling' session at the Planetwork conference this week with capsule reviews of presentations by:

Joe Skopek - EARTHscope Library,  American Association for the Advancement of Science’s (AAAS) Atlas of Population and Environment, Green Maps "Lomap" demo of Lower Manhattan "as seen by youth", Todd Helt - Telemorphic Maplicity demo nad finally , Ben Discoe - the Virtual Terrain Project.

Schuyler Concludes:

" ... Impressive as these demos are, the work is still far from complete. Beyond the systems presented, free or inexpensive tools are few and far between, and the level of technical expertise needed to make them do useful and novel things is still a fairly high barrier to entry. More importantly, even when useful and useable tools are available, they depend on the availability of accurate data..."

Clearly, we're on the threshold of  what Howard Rheingold describes in Smart Mobs  as  ' The Era of Sentient Things', and there's a lot of work for ahead to develop interoperable systems and data and most importantly, genuinely useful geospatial applications. I'll cover some of those developments from here on Starhill, and later perhaps organize a  follow-on conference to build on the great work so far. Stay tuned. /Mike Liebhold
