OpenGiS Location Spec,  Java Location APIs,

After bouncing around for years in wireless and telco standards committees,
The Open Geodata Model Working Group of the OGC/W3C ( OpenGIS consortium)  has finally  released version 1.0 of the OpenLS  Location Services spec:

  " The RFC defines XML for Location Services, which consists of interfaces for   (15) specific services including:
1. Directory Service"a Yellow Pages of the nearest  of a specific product or service;
2. Gateway Service  fetches the position of a mobile device from the network
3. Location Utility Service - Geocoder/Reverse Geocoder
4. Presentation Service- implements map portrayal, and draws a map
5. Route Service- creates a travel route ..."

Here's more good news about
Java J2ME which already runs on almost any platform around including, Sony / Palm OS, Nokia Symbian, Qualcomm / BREW, Linux, MS Mobile  ( hp ipaqs,  etc.).

The JCP (Java Community Process) Expert Group for JSR-000179 Location API for J2ME  has just published the Final Release of its specification.
