Google Labs Location Search
September 17, 2003
/Mike Liebhold

Here's Google Lab's new prototype location service built on MapQuest maps

This could  be based on Dan Egnor's geocoder,  the winner of the 2002 Google Programming contest. The new prototype is still a little rough, and the content very sparse. Still, this is a welcome start. They may be actually geocoding web pages, but it looks a lot like  a search returns only business listings. Let's hope they develop a useful geocoded index of web content and open up the API soon.

Meanwhile, Overture Lab's location demo  has been yanked:

"
Thank you for your interest in Overture's local search development site. The latest phase of our technical testing is complete, and the site has been taken offline. Your interaction with this site and the feedback you've provided will be used to further refine our technology platform."
