Review of Tachyon Internet Protocol Services Over Satellite.
June 7, 2003

If you live way out in the remote wilds like I do, and have no way to get dsl, or cable, you may find this interesting. For the last four years I've been very fortunate to have had use of a prototype  IP over satellite dish connection from Tachyon, providing industrial strength 1.5mbits/sec down and 256-512 kbits/sec upstream guaranteed bandwidth supporting all standard internet protocols, tcp, http/web access, voice over IP, ipvideo, as well as ipsec standard private networks.

This is -not- a consumer performance and priced service, rather a T1 class connection for extreme rural and remote internet protocol applications.
The Tachyon system has just been selected by the US Forest Service, as the standard for field deployable emergency intranets.

The system includes the 1 meter dish, a Ku Band recieve/transmit  radio and an indoor unit that is actually a full-blown linux-squid proxy server/static router combo with 1 ethernet port. I've got a 4-port linksys  hub/firewall behind that supporting multiple PCs.  I plan on installing an 802.11 wireless base station one of these days. I own 4 IP addresses,  but that is up to you and your ISP. The Tachyon hub in San Diego is dual  homed to ATT and UUnet IP backbones that will transport your bits to your ISP or company, anywhere..

Normal timing problems with internet protocols over satellite have been very nicely mitigated with Tachyon''s patented software. http, ftp, smtp, video conferencing and voice over IP have all been thoroughly tested and documented by a National Science Foundation program at http://www.adec.edu/nsf/index.html

Although we live on an exposed ridge, I've never lost connection due to alignment. ( A brace for the dish did snap once after an 80-90 mph gust). Installation and alignment of  the 1 meter dish takes an expert. Remember, You are aiming a radio transmitter at a pinspot target 24,000 miles up. It's very tricky. Tachyon will train qualified users to tune there own dishes. John Gilmore and team manages their own Tachyon connections every year as the principal outside connection to the Burning Man festival in Nevada.

Tachyon does not sell directly to individual users. Somewhere on their website, (www.tachyon.net ) they should  have links to partners who can quote prices. When I last checked, Tachyon's highest level  1.5mbit/sec.service costs were in the range of industrial strength landline T1 IP connection. and -not- in the dsl price range. They do also offer lower service  levels, 768, 512, 384, 128, 64 kbits/sec. priced accordingly.

The service is incredibly reliable and the customer service has been excellent. I can't recommend it highly enough to someone who really needs a -very- high quality Internet protocol connection. ( Disclaimer : I was one of the founders of Tachyon, but have had very little business connections since 2000.)
