Web Map Development Environments June 30, 2003 It's hard to keep up.with all the cool map sites on the web. Here are a few noteworthy development environments:: The Virtual Terrain Project ( mentioned once already here) has the ambitious goal to foster the creation of tools for easily constructing any part of the real world in interactive, 3D digital form. This is a beautiful suite of tools. Warning: the development image is 65MB! Terravison is a distributed, interactive terrain visualization system developed by SRI International, through 'Digital Earth' program funding. It allows users to navigate, in real time, through a 3-D graphical representation of a real landscape created from elevation data and aerial images of that landscape. All data can be distributed over the Web and support is provided for overlaying GeoVRML 3D models. Map Bureau ( "Mapping
for the Rest of Us") produces web-delivered maps that show events and processes
as well as geography based on the Resource Description Framework (RDF), from the Semantic Web Project,
as the common representation of spatial and temporal information, and
a language called RDFMap which targets a simple but useful subset
of the mapping domain. A more extensive language is deployed for internal
use; a public specification of this extension is in progress. |
